WITTNAUER JUMP HOUR "COFFIN STYLE" WATCH CA. 1975

450,00 €

Founded in New York in 1885 by Swiss watchmaker Albert Wittnauer, Wittnauer quickly established itself as a key player in American watchmaking. Initially specializing in the import and assembly of Swiss movements for the American market, the brand distinguished itself with robust, precise and affordable watches.

Throughout the 20th century, Wittnauer supplied instruments for aviation, navigation and even scientific expeditions. It worked closely with Longines, sharing movements and innovations that enhanced its reputation.

The Wittnauer Jump Hour "Coffin Style" is an emblematic watch of the 1970s, embodying both watchmaking innovation and the retro-futuristic style of the decade. With its trapezoidal "coffin" case, this watch immediately stands out for its bold, angular and resolutely vintage design.

Unlike traditional watches with hands, the Wittnauer Jump Hour uses a mechanical digital display, where the hours and minutes are shown in small windows. The hour "jumps" instantly with each change, thanks to an ingenious internal mechanism, hence the name "jump hour".

This watch is equipped with the Tenor-Dorly TD1393 automatic movement, a Swiss caliber renowned for its complexity and rarity. Produced at a time when mechanical watches were trying to compete with the advent of quartz, this Wittnauer represents a unique attempt to blend precision mechanics with visual modernity. Its look recalls the futuristic concepts of the time, close to the space and automotive aesthetics of the 70s. This model is in good condition for its 50th anniversary, except for the crown, whose plating has faded over the years.

Today, the Wittnauer Jump Hour "Coffin Style" is a rare and sought-after timepiece, as much for its aesthetics as for its technical innovation. It embodies a special moment in watchmaking history, at the crossroads of tradition and experimentation.
