Born at the turn of the 1960s and 70s, the Fortis Skylark embodies a little-known but fascinating facet of the Swiss watchmaker Fortis. Known for its aviation and space exploration watches, the brand also ventured into the realm of dress watches with a keen sense of style and aesthetic innovation. The Skylark is one of its finest examples.

Founded in 1912 in Granges, Fortis distinguished itself as a pioneer of the automatic watch thanks to its collaboration with John Harwood from 1926. Faithful to the spirit of ingenuity that forged its reputation, the manufacture explored new creative territories in the following decades.
It was in this context, at the end of the 1960s, that the Skylark was born: a watch that blends formal sobriety, refinement and touches of typically seventies audacity.

Designed as a dress watch, the Fortis Skylark is distinguished by its monobloc case, a technical feat at the time, offering both slimness and water resistance. Its diameter of approximately 36 to 38 mm gives it a balanced presence on the wrist, suitable for both current trends and vintage tastes. Available in steel or 20-karat gold plating, the watch captivates with its fluid profile and clean lines, where every detail reflects the precision of Swiss craftsmanship.

This dial, with its subtly grainy texture, often available in shades of deep green, blue-grey, or golden champagne, captures light in a unique way. The reflections change with the movements of the wrist, evoking the natural material from which it takes its name.
Each example thus appears unique, the micro-variations in surface creating a visual effect that is rare for a watch of this era.

This decorative approach reflects the creative freedom that characterized the late 1960s: a period when Swiss watchmakers experimented with textures, colors, and materials to break with traditional classicism. The result is a watch that, while remaining elegant, asserts a true artistic personality.

Beneath its understated elegance, the Skylark houses a 21-jewel Swiss automatic movement, true to Fortis' tradition of precision.
More than fifty years after its creation, the watch retains all its charm and authenticity: it embodies an era when watch design allowed itself to be both technical and poetic.

Its blend of Swiss sobriety and textured creativity makes it a valuable witness to the evolution of 20th-century watch design.
This is a watch that does not simply tell the time: it tells its story, through the material of its dial and the precision of its mechanics.
