FORTIS "TRUE LINE" WATCH, CA. 1960

Founded in 1912 by Walter Vogt, the Swiss watchmaker Fortis is now renowned for its enduring ties to aviation and the space race. However, at the dawn of the 1960s, the brand was preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary and wanted to mark the occasion with a statement of understated elegance. It was against this backdrop that the True Line collection was born—a line designed to embody the “pure line,” combining an ultra-thin profile for its time with absolute geometric minimalism.

Within this collection, the very first series of the 6083 model would shake up the conventions of traditional watchmaking. While the vast majority of manufacturers at the time dutifully placed the date window at 3 o’clock or 6 o’clock to maintain symmetry, Fortis’s designers took a wildly daring gamble: moving the date display to 1 o’clock. Even more surprising, this window abandoned the classic rectangular shape in favor of a perfectly round format encircled by metal, resembling a navigational instrument.

This aesthetic choice—almost provocative—actually served a very specific practical purpose. When worn on the left wrist, the watch naturally tends to tuck under the sleeve of a jacket or suit. By moving the date window to the 1 o’clock position, the designers allowed the wearer to read the day at a glance as soon as the top of the dial began to peek out from under the sleeve, without having to pull the sleeve all the way back up.

From a technical standpoint, this visual eccentricity required a significant effort to adapt. Housed in a 32.5-mm case finished with a robust 20-micron gold plating is the ETA 2452 automatic movement. To make the magic happen, Fortis’s watchmakers had to modify the original mechanism, which was designed for a display at the 3 o’clock position. The day disc was completely re-engraved so that each numeral rotates to align perfectly vertically, directly opposite the round window at the 1 o’clock position.

Production of this first generation lasted only a few years. By the mid-1960s, Fortis had streamlined its True Line collection by moving the date window to the 3 o'clock position and introducing more conventional “Day-Date” models. 

This model, meanwhile, is from the first production run, in near-mint condition, featuring a rare smoked sunburst dial and accompanied by its original lizard-skin strap. A truly unique piece.
