JAEGER-LECOULTRE X AIR CONGO CLOCK, CA. 1960

1 850,00 €

This rare desk clock is not merely a timekeeping device; it is a fascinating testament to the history of aviation and African geopolitics. Founded in June 1961, shortly after the Democratic Republic of the Congo gained independence and with technical support from the Belgian airline Sabena, Air Congo served as the country’s national airline. For a decade, it embodied the prestige and modernity of the young nation, before being renamed Air Zaire in 1971. The presence of this short-lived airline’s name on the dial anchors the object in a very specific historical period of the first half of the 1960s.

In the 1960s, during the golden age of civil aviation, airlines routinely commissioned exclusive items from the world’s leading luxury houses. These exceptional pieces were intended as diplomatic gifts, for executives, or for VIP passengers traveling in First Class. To fulfill this commission, Air Congo turned to the Swiss manufacturer Jaeger-LeCoultre, the undisputed master of travel and desk clocks of the era. This model was also produced for Hermès and could be presented in a saddle-leather case. This example is in exceptional condition for its age compared to other similar pieces and comes with its rare original box.

Beneath its elegant dial, bearing the dual signatures of Jaeger-LeCoultre and Air Congo, this table clock houses a mechanical movement of the highest craftsmanship. It is equipped with the legendary Swiss movement featuring an 8-day power reserve, symbolized by the number “8” proudly inscribed on the dial. This technical feat of miniaturization allowed the clock to operate completely autonomously for over a week after a single manual winding—a standard of absolute convenience for frequent travelers and executive offices of the era.

Today, copies bearing the “Air Congo” signature are evidence of an extremely limited production run. Given the company’s brief existence under that exact name (1961–1971), these pieces are true cultural treasures. They stand at the crossroads of two worlds: the excellence of 20th-century Swiss watchmaking and the industrial history of newly independent African nations.
